What you should remember
The most common way to find out your cholesterol numbers is to have a fasting lipid profile, sometimes referred to as a cholesterol test.
You must fast (avoid food, beverages other than water, and medications for 9-12 hours) prior to taking your test in order for results to be accurate. Make a note next to any numbers on your tracker printout that correspond to a test for which you did not fast.
Learn more about the important components of your lipid profile:
Total cholesterol is the total amount of cholesterol in your blood
LDL cholesterol is also known as "bad" cholesterol
HDL cholesterol is also known as "good" cholesterol
Triglycerides are another type of lipid carried by a lipoprotein
